The Institute of inorganic and non-metallic materials was founded in 1956, which was formerly the glass and enamel Institute of State Bureau of Light Industry. After the system reform in 1999, it was merged into Dong Hua University. The discipline of inorganic and non-metallic material was set up in 2001 by the college of material science and engineering of Dong Hua University on basis of the scientific research strength of the inorganic and non-metallic institute. Now there are three professor-ranked senior engineers and over 20 senior engineers with well-equipped technique and self- contained test instruments. It is the oldest research institute in the fields of glass and enamel application and development, and has made prominent contributions for the technological improvement in the light industry.
On the basis of gaining the reward for research of "the Eighth 5-Years-Plan" State Key Technology Attacking Program, the institute completed two projects of "the 9th 5-Years-Plan" planning projects ahead of schedule. One of them is the research for new type fireproof materials used in the top structure of large glass furnace; the other is the research for polycrystalline fiber and its compound products, and their application and development on high temperature furnace. As a coordinated organization of military industry, many projects of the institute of inorganic and non-metallic materials are auxiliary for the key projects of Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, such as the glass used for temperature sensor of the No. 10 project, amorphous and low melting point glass and S0CL electrolytic liquid corrosion-proof glass for No. 10 project, the glass applied in sealing pipes of temperature sensor of "10A" fuel and lubricating oil, high resistance to high electricity intensity compressed sealing glass powder for "J10", dilatable sealing glass, glass powder used as medium complemented for nuke submarine project, "921- 2" light innocuous fireproof and heat-insulation compound materials for returning cabin of passenger satellite, the antimagnetic ceramic framework and the transparent no-dilation microcrystalline glass for accelerometers of peg-top orientation instruments used for spaceflight and aviation aerospace and missal guidance systems.
The institute of inorganic and non-metallic materials has also established statewide quality supervision and test center for glass and enamel products authorized by State Bureau of Quality and Technological Supervision and State Bureau of Light Industry, made and revised nearly ten sector standards and national standards during " 9th 5 " period. It has done a great deal of work in order to standardize markets, maintain legitimate rights of enterprise and protect consumer's interests. This centre has also held the training activities about propagation of standards and test methods nearly 20 times, and developed nearly 10 kinds of detecting instruments.
The state light industry bijou quality supervision and test center which belongs to inorganic and non- metallic material research school is authorized by State Bureau of Quality and Technological Supervision and State Bureau of Light Industry, providing the notarization data which have the legal authority for the society. The center is equipped with the most advanced test equipments of American GIA and the diamond microscope from Belgium, and other test equipments for bijou and rare metal.
The Journal "Glass and enamel" published by national glass and enamel industry information center is chosen in Source of Chinese science quotation data and Chinese Core Journals, obtained the second prize of excellent journals of light industry association, the third prize of Shanghai excellent journals, standard prize of Chinese science journal index. The center is also the glass and enamel information-distributing center of Chinese light industry.
The inorganic and non-metallic materials is an important branch discipline of the material science. With the fast development of the modern science and technology, the composition, processing and application of inorganic and non- metallic material have gone beyond the silicate material. The appearances of new materials made their applications expand from light industry, architectural materials, metallurgical and chemical industry to military industry, national defense, aerospace, information communication and biomaterial engineering.
This discipline mainly studies the fundamental theory of inorganic and non-metallic materials, considers inorganic and non-metallic material science and inorganic and non-metallic material engineering as the two bases. The discipline is characterized by such features as special glass, inorganic coating, bijou and silicate engineering, etc. The undergraduate program of this discipline is to train the talents who have a good knowledge of inorganic and non-metallic materials, and can be engaged in research, testing, preparation and processing of inorganic and non-metallic materials, as well as management in the relevant fields.
