For last 50 years and more the College has made great progress in its discipline construction. It has been from a single discipline of Chemical Fibers to the only college in the university, which has a doctorate-granting discipline both in Engineering and Science.
At present the College has 3 departments for undergraduates. They are Polymer Materials Science & Engineering, Composite Materials Science & Engineering and Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Science & Engineering. The first one was stemmed from the Department of Chemical Fibers Engineering, It began to enroll master's degree students since 1959 and was among the first batch to be authorized to grant doctoral degrees in 1981. It got the approval of “Key Discipline” among the first batch in 1986. As the need of discipline development, the Department of Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Science & Engineering was set up in 2001. The College began to recruit students in the category of materials since 2004. Based on the development of its major fields for many years, the Department of Composite Materials Science & Engineering was set up and began to enroll students in 2006.
The College has taken the personnel training as the primary task for the last fifty years, more than 5000 well-trained students have graduated from the college for industries of polymer materials and inorganic nonmetallic materials. Some have become the technical personnel or senior managers in field of materials science. Some graduate students have advanced to the leading position in their fields.
For the last few years, the College holds high rates of employment of the graduate students. In 2004, the rate was 98.3%, and in 2005, 97.9%, in 2006, 96.8%. It was 100% in 2007. The main employments are in materials enterprises, and the students pursuing furthering studies as postgraduate students are annually increasing.
